Creating operands

In the Add/Edit Search Limit page, the Operand Builder is used to define a single search criterion that can be used on its own to limit search results, or combined with one or more operands to create a search expression. (For more information, see Creating expressions.) The system administrator creates operands by selecting a search field name and an operator, and supplying a desired value.

To create an operand

1 Under Operand Builder, choose a search field name from the Field drop-down list.

Note: The search field names in the list are defined in Search Configuration > Search Fields. (For more information, see Managing search fields .)

2 Choose an operator in the Operator drop-down list. (For descriptions of each operator, see Fields: Add/Edit Search Limit.)
3 In the Value field, type or choose the alphanumeric string you want the selected search field to have. When typing the string, the maximum character limit is 4096 characters.

Note: Choose the Refresh Values option next to the Field field to see if the selected search field has library-defined values from which you may choose for the Value field. If the selected search field is a global search field or a site-specific search field, the Value field changes to a palette to display the available values that can be selected for the search field. If the selected search field has existing defined values, the Value field changes from a text field to a drop-down list box. If the selected search field does not have existing defined values in the system, the Value field remains as a text field.

Note: A typed value may include quotation marks if you want to include them when search fields are checked for possible matching text. For example, if you want a value to be Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan, type Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan in the Value field.

4 Choose Build Operand.

When you choose Build Operand, the Expression Builder and Search Limit fields display.

5 Do one of the following:
If you want to use the operand itself as a search limit, skip the Expression Builder fields, and complete the Search Limit fields. (For information on the Search Limit fields, see Fields: Add/Edit Search Limit.)
If you want to create another operand to use in an expression, repeat steps 1 through 4 for each operand you want to create. First, build the expression. (For instructions, see Creating expressions.) Then, complete the Search Limit fields to create the search limit. (For instructions, see Creating a new search limit.)
